The Rover

 Hello everyone...

This blog based on thinking activity assigned by Megha ma'am .

Question 1: Does Angellica's view of financial negotiations before marriage as prostitution hold true?

Angellica's view of financial negotiations before marriage as prostitution is a complex one. On the one hand, it can be seen as a valid perspective, given the historical and cultural context in which marriage has been viewed as a financial transaction between families. In many societies, women have been seen as property, and their marriages have been arranged to benefit their families financially. In this context, it is understandable that Angellica might see any negotiation over her own dowry as a form of prostitution.

On the other hand, Angellica's view can also be seen as limiting and restrictive. It denies women the right to make their own financial decisions and to have a say in their own future. It also reinforces the idea that women are only valuable for their money or their ability to produce children.

Ultimately, whether or not one agrees with Angellica's view is a matter of personal opinion. There are valid arguments to be made on both sides of the issue. However, it is important to remember that Angellica's view is a product of her time and place, and that it may not be applicable to all women in all situations.

Question 2: Do you agree with Virginia Woolf's statement that Aphra Behn earned women the right to speak their minds?

I agree with Virginia Woolf's statement that Aphra Behn earned women the right to speak their minds. Behn was a groundbreaking playwright who challenged the status quo and paved the way for other women to be heard. Her plays were often controversial and subversive, but they were also popular and influential.

One of the most important ways in which Behn earned women the right to speak their minds was through her portrayal of female characters. Behn's female characters are strong, independent, and intelligent. They are not afraid to speak their minds, even when it gets them into trouble. This was a radical departure from the traditional depiction of women in literature, in which they were often portrayed as weak, subservient, and silent.

Another way in which Behn earned women the right to speak their minds was through her own personal life. Behn was a successful playwright and businesswoman in a time when women were largely excluded from the public sphere. She was also a strong advocate for women's rights and education. Her example showed other women that it was possible to achieve success and independence, even in a male-dominated society.

In conclusion, I believe that Aphra Behn earned women the right to speak their minds through her groundbreaking plays and her own personal example. She was a pioneer who paved the way for other women to be heard.

Question 3: Which female character best represents the playwright, Aphra Behn?

I believe that the female character who best represents Aphra Behn is Hellena from the play The Rover. Hellena is a strong, independent, and intelligent woman who is not afraid to speak her mind. She is also a successful businesswoman who has achieved independence and financial security.

In many ways, Hellena is a reflection of Behn herself. Behn was also a strong and independent woman who achieved success in a male-dominated society. She was a successful playwright and businesswoman, and she was also a strong advocate for women's rights and education.

In addition to her strength and independence, Hellena is also a complex and multifaceted character. She is not perfect, and she makes mistakes. However, she always learns from her mistakes, and she always comes out stronger in the end.

This complexity and multifaceted nature is also characteristic of Behn herself. Behn was a complex and fascinating woman who lived a full and adventurous life. She was a playwright, a businesswoman, a spy, and a feminist. She was also a woman who made mistakes, but she always learned from them and moved on.

In conclusion, I believe that the female character who best represents Aphra Behn is Hellena from the play The Rover. Hellena is a strong, independent, and intelligent woman who is not afraid to speak her mind. She is also a successful businesswoman who has achieved independence and financial security. In many ways, Hellena is a reflection of Behn herself.

Pride and prejudice

 Hello everyone.....

This blog based on thinking activity on the particular novel pride and prejudice, this tasks assigned by Megha ma'am .

Alternative Endings to Pride and Prejudice

Narrative Strategy of the Novel and Movie

Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice is told from the third-person limited perspective of Elizabeth Bennet, the protagonist. This allows readers to have a deep understanding of Elizabeth's thoughts and feelings, while also maintaining some objectivity. The novel also uses a variety of other narrative techniques, such as foreshadowing, irony, and satire.

The 2005 film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice remains faithful to the novel in many ways, but it also makes some changes. For example, the film uses a more omniscient narrator, which allows viewers to see things from other characters' perspectives as well. The film also uses flashbacks and flash-forwards to help tell the story.

Illustration of the Society of Jane Austen's Time

Jane Austen's novels are set in Regency England, a period of social and economic change. The upper class was still very wealthy and powerful, but the middle class was growing in size and influence. Women had few legal rights, and marriage was often seen as the only way for a woman to secure her financial future.

In Pride and Prejudice, Austen explores the social dynamics of Regency England through the eyes of Elizabeth Bennet, a young woman from the middle class. Elizabeth is intelligent and independent, but she is also aware of the limitations that her gender and social class place on her.

Alternative Endings

What if Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth never got together?

If Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth had never gotten together, it would have been a major departure from the traditional happy ending of a romantic novel. Elizabeth likely would have married someone else, perhaps Mr. Collins or Mr. Wickham. However, it is also possible that she would have remained unmarried.

What if Lydia's elopement had a different outcome?

If Lydia's elopement had a different outcome, it would have had a major impact on the Bennet family. If Lydia had married Mr. Wickham, it would have been a social disgrace for the Bennets. It is also possible that Lydia would have been abandoned by Mr. Wickham, leaving her penniless and alone.

Consequences of These Changes

If Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth had never gotten together, it would have had a significant impact on their lives. Elizabeth would have missed out on the opportunity to marry a man who loved and respected her. Mr. Darcy would have missed out on the opportunity to marry a woman who challenged him and made him a better person.

If Lydia's elopement had a different outcome, it would have had a major impact on the Bennet family. The Bennets' social standing would have been damaged, and they may have lost the respect of their neighbors. Elizabeth and her sisters would have had a harder time finding suitable husbands.

Conclusion

Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice is a timeless classic that explores themes of love, class, and social prejudice. The novel's two main characters, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, overcome their pride and prejudice to fall in love. However, it is interesting to imagine what would have happened if they had never gotten together, or if Lydia's elopement had a different outcome. The alternative endings to the novel explore these possibilities and show how different choices can lead to different consequences.

Frankenstein

Hello everyone...

This blog based on thinking activity on the topic frankenstein.which is assigned by Megha ma'am , in this blog I'm going to discuss about the topics like, difference between Movie and original novel , who is real monster and so on.

"Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" is a film that should be on your watchlist.

Yes, there are several differences between Mary Shelley's original novel "Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus" and the 1994 film adaptation "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein." While the movie is generally faithful to the novel's themes and characters, there are notable departures and adaptations made for cinematic purposes. Here are some of the key differences:

1.In the novel, Elizabeth is Victor Frankenstein's cousin and fiancée, and her character is relatively less developed. In the film, she plays a more prominent role as Victor's love interest, and a romantic subplot is introduced to add emotional depth to the story.

2. While the novel provides a general description of the Creature's appearance, the film takes creative liberties with the design of the Creature. The film's portrayal of the Creature, played by Robert De Niro, involves elaborate makeup and prosthetics that create a more visually striking and grotesque appearance.

3. The film is set in a more historically accurate 18th-century Europe, while the novel is set in the late 18th century but has a more timeless quality that doesn't adhere strictly to historical accuracy.

4. The novel is primarily told through a series of letters and framed narratives, while the film follows a more traditional cinematic narrative structure. Some events and character backgrounds are condensed or altered for the sake of pacing.

5.The film introduces some additional characters and subplots, such as the character of Captain Walton (played by Aidan Quinn), who serves as a framing device for the narrative.

6. The film simplifies and streamlines some of the scientific aspects of Victor Frankenstein's experiments, making them more accessible to a general audience.

7. The film's ending differs from the novel's conclusion in terms of the fate of certain characters and the overall resolution of the story.

While "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" strives to capture the spirit and themes of the novel, it takes creative liberties to adapt the source material to a cinematic medium. These differences are common in film adaptations of literary works, as filmmakers often need to make choices that will work within the constraints of a movie's runtime and the expectations of a movie-going audience.

Second major question is who is real monster in this particular novel . The answer is probably the the creator victor Frankenstein that he thought about this unusual creation. We can also say that the situations or society somewhere plays the roles of monster. That the situation makes him monster.

Hard Times

Hard Times: For This Time by Charles Dickens

Hello everyone .......

This blog is based on the thinking activity,on the particular novel Hard Times which is written by Charles Dickens . This task assigned by dilip sir barad.

In this blog I'm going to deal with a topic like what is the difference between a play performance hard times and the novel Hard Times . Before discussing main topic let us look upon the historical background of the novel and shot information about the author and all.

Charles John Huffam Dickens (7 February 1812 – 9 June 1870) was an English novelist and social critic who created some of the world's best-known fictional characters, and is regarded by many as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era.His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime and, by the 20th century, critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories are widely read today.

 His notable works :-

The Pickwick Papers,

Oliver Twist,

Nicholas Nickleby,

A Christmas Carol,

David Copperfield,

Bleak House,

Little Dorrit,

A Tale of Two Cities,

Great Expectations.

Hard Times by Charles Dickens:-

Hard Times is a novel written by Charles Dickens during the Victorian Era. It was first published in serial form under the title “Hard Times: For These Times” in the periodical “Household Words” during 1854.

Dickens was motivated by social concerns: he feared that industrialisation and 'progress' threatened to stunt human sympathies, forcing people into mechanistic social roles. He conveys what life was like in factory towns by blending documentary realism with imaginative grotesques and vivid , melodramatic elements. The novel portrays the dismal quality of life that the working class people in the cities often endured.

This novel also helpful to compare contemporary time's situation of industrialisation and class system and marriage and so on .

The play also has three parts like novels.

1) Sowing
2) Reaping
3) Garnering

Starting and the end of the poem contains songs which describe narration very well.

Importance of Point of View: Dickens and Director used limited omniscient voice for putting hanger and making play intresting. It's tone is like wry mocking and sugar coated peels, audience first had laugh and then realised the satire.

SONG OF THE PLAY :

This presents the reality of industrial and materialistic life.

The final song is at the end of the play about the general outcome of the play.

As we can see here that some lines of these two songs are quite heart touching and interesting in a way, so that we can connect with contemporary time and situation too.

Pamela or virtues rewarded

If Pamela was in the contemporary time, will the story take any changes?

Hello everyone....

This blog based on thinking activity and the subject is the character of Pamela from the novel "Pamela or virtues rewarded" which is written by samuel Richardson, if Pamela was in the contemporary time than will the story take any changes or not !! This blog task assigned by vaidehi ma'am.

As we already know that "Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded," is written by Samuel Richardson . Pamela is the novel which is published in 1740 and it is emerged during the 18th-century Enlightenment era in England. we can easily says that this novel addresses class and gender norms, marks the rise of the novel as a literary form, employs an epistolary style, and emphasizes moral and didactic themes. The novel's impact on literature and societal discussions about women's roles was profound.

we can also considered this novel as a sentimental novel as well as we can say that Pamela is an Epistolary novel . we find majorly three kinds of epistolary novel, 1)Monophonic, 2)Dialogic and 3) Polyphonic. Among these Pamela we can find as a pure epistolary novel, in which we find total 32 letters. we are also able to note that there are three type of letters that we find while reading of this particular novel and they are ,

A) The first many letters' exchanges is in between our main character Pamela and her parents.

B) The second type of letters , not proper type of letters but kind of messages we can find in between Pamela and Mr.Williams.

C) The last third type , in which we can see that Pamela is captivated so she started writing journal or we can say that diary. we can say that this journal leads novel towards happy ending .

let us discuss about the brief introduction about the author of this particular novel and the main character Pamela.

Very brief introduction about author:-

Samuel Richardson (1689-1761) was an English novelist and printer, best known for his groundbreaking work in the development of the modern novel. Born in Derbyshire, England, Richardson's most famous novels include "Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded" (1740) and "Clarissa, or, the History of a Young Lady" (1748). He is celebrated for his use of letter writing as a narrative form and his exploration of complex character development and moral themes in his works. Richardson's contributions to the novel genre had a profound influence on subsequent literary movements, making him a significant figure in the history of English literature.

Characters in the novel Pamela:-

1) Pamela Andrews
2) Her parents
3) Lady B
4) Mr B
5) Mr Williams
6) Mrs Jewkes
7) Sally Godfrey

Pamela :-
Pamela Andrews is a 15-year-old servant girl from a relatively impoverished background who, after the death of her old master, Lady B, starts a new job working for Lady B’s son, Mr. B. Pamela is a skilled and prolific writer, and she conveys her story through journal entries and through letters she writes to with her mother and father. Pamela’s other important trait is her “virtue”—she has a strong faith in God and as a result, she feels that she must remain chaste until marriage. This puts her in constant conflict with Mr. B, who lusts for Pamela—but initially has no desire to marry her. When Pamela refuses Mr. B’s advances, he kidnaps and imprisons her, straining the limits of Pamela’s willpower. Pamela often lacks agency in her own story; she’s repeatedly unable to escape Mr. B and depends on the aid of characters who try to help her, like Mrs. Jewkes and Mr. Williams. Nevertheless, she accomplishes something extraordinary: when the rakish Mr. B finally reads Pamela’s journal entries about her imprisonment, he’s so moved that he begins to treat her better. After a long period of virtuous suffering, Pamela finally gets rewarded when Mr. B agrees to marry her. Pamela takes her new role seriously, trying to be as charitable as she can with her husband’s money. As the Editor states directly in the epilogue, Pamela is a role model: both for other characters in the story and for the audience. Pamela’s life story suggests that people who endure suffering with grace will eventually reap the benefits of their good behavior.

This is how Pamela's character portrayed in the original novel , but we all have a question that what if Pamela Andrew was in current time , if she was in contemporary time than will the story take any change ?

The answer is , probably yes. Because the novel pamela was published during 1740 it means in 18th century. At that time we all know that the condition of poor people and as specially women. In the novel somewhere we see that the lack of education in the case of women , that after Mrs B's death when Mr B is trying to make good relations with Pamela at that time he gives her books to read and all but we knows that pamela is already writes letters to her parents so she is capable enough to read and write. But in a way she is quite innocent that she is not getting in the very first time that someone is in a way abusing her or take an advantage of her, still she is very clear in her words that she wants to be straight forward. now if she was in contemporary time she might not tolerate all these stuffs, she might complained against Mr B. Apart from that we already knows that this is an epistolary novel , the communication between two people are in a letter form but what if this particular novel comes up with contemporary time than so many platforms were probably there in the novel , in a comic way we can say that the novel we may get in social media's talkative form isn't it ...?

At the end of the novel when Mr B reads Pamela's journal and his heart has been changed , but what if he didn't get her journal and he remains same! And also we find that pamela becomes ready to do marriage with Mr B in just a single letter , her virtues are that much better we can say that , but if she was in contemporary time is that virtues are really appreciated ...!! according to me not so , how can she forget that what Mr B did to her , and if she was in contemporary time than firstly she  went to her parents home and discuss about what she have to do and in a more she tries to know more or in a way we can say that she tries to investigate more about Mr B and later on she take decision to marrying him . Even after knowing that Mr B has a girl child from another she remains same that we find in main novel but if Pamela was in contemporary time she might not tolerate all this .

According to me if Pamela was in contemporary time she might be aware of all women rights , technology and all , so story might take changes for sure . what do you think about it , just do let me know in the comment section.

Thank you so much for reading....

Have a great time.

Movie review

Movie reviews of the movies Pride and prejudice & Frankenstein

Hello everyone.....

This blog is based on movie review of both the movie review. Both the movie Pride and prejudice and Frankenstein are worth watching movies according to me as we have these two novels in our syllabus I watched these two movies and their reviews are given below.

Movie review of the movie "Pride and prejudice" (2005) :-

Title: Pride and Prejudice (2005)

Director: Joe Wright

Genre:Romance, Drama

Starring: Keira Knightley, Matthew Macfadyen, Donald Sutherland, Brenda Blethyn, Rosamund Pike, Judi Dench

"Pride and Prejudice," directed by Joe Wright and based on Jane Austen's classic novel of the same name, is a timeless and beloved period drama that was released in 2005. This adaptation brings the story of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy to life with a fresh perspective, while still staying true to the essence of Austen's original work. With a talented ensemble cast and stunning cinematography, the film has garnered critical acclaim and a devoted fanbase.

Plot Summary:

The film is set in early 19th-century England and revolves around the lives of the Bennet family, particularly the second eldest daughter, Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley). Elizabeth is an intelligent, independent, and spirited young woman who refuses to conform to the societal norms of her time, especially when it comes to marriage. Her mother, Mrs. Bennet (Brenda Blethyn), is obsessed with marrying off her daughters to wealthy suitors, while her father, Mr. Bennet (Donald Sutherland), is more laid-back and pragmatic.

The plot is set in motion when the wealthy and reserved Mr. Charles Bingley (Simon Woods) arrives in the neighborhood, along with his aloof friend, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen). Bingley is taken with Elizabeth's elder sister, Jane (Rosamund Pike), while Darcy initially comes off as proud and distant. Elizabeth forms a negative opinion of Darcy, believing him to be full of pride and prejudice, and the two engage in a series of misunderstandings and clashes of wit. As the story unfolds, it explores themes of class, reputation, and the complexities of love. Elizabeth's journey is at the heart of the narrative as she grapples with her own preconceptions and societal expectations, and she gradually comes to understand Darcy's true character.

1. The cast of "Pride and Prejudice" delivers outstanding performances, with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen in the lead roles. Knightley brings a modern, feisty energy to Elizabeth Bennet while maintaining the character's intelligence and independence. Macfadyen portrays Mr. Darcy with a brooding charm that evolves as the character undergoes transformation. The supporting cast, including Brenda Blethyn as Mrs. Bennet, Judi Dench as Lady Catherine de Bourgh, and Donald Sutherland as Mr. Bennet, all contribute to the film's richness with their nuanced portrayals.

2.  Joe Wright's direction is a standout feature of the film. His use of long tracking shots and lush, picturesque settings captures the beauty of the English countryside and the elegance of the Regency era. The film's visual aesthetic is simply breathtaking, making it a treat for the eyes.

3.   Deborah Moggach's screenplay provides a faithful adaptation of Austen's novel while also injecting some fresh elements. The dialogue is sharp, witty, and often humorous, keeping the audience engaged. The film successfully condenses the novel's intricate plot while retaining its core themes and character development.

4. "Pride and Prejudice" explores themes of social class, marriage, reputation, and personal growth. It delves into the limitations and expectations placed on women in the 19th century and how individuals navigate societal pressures. The film's exploration of love as a force that transcends societal boundaries remains timeless and relevant.

5. Dario Marianelli's musical score is a highlight of the film. The emotive and evocative music enhances the storytelling, adding depth to the characters' emotions and the overall atmosphere of the film. The famous piano piece "Dawn" is particularly memorable.

"Pride and Prejudice" (2005) is a superb adaptation of Jane Austen's beloved novel. It skillfully combines strong performances, exquisite cinematography, and a faithful script to create a captivating period drama that appeals to both fans of the book and newcomers. The film's enduring appeal lies in its timeless exploration of love, pride, and societal expectations, making it a must-watch for fans of romance and historical drama. Joe Wright's adaptation stands as a testament to the enduring power of Austen's storytelling, and it continues to be a cherished cinematic gem.

Why this movie is worth watching and what's the difference between main text and movie !

"Pride and Prejudice" (2005) is worth watching for several reasons, and here's a summary of why it's a compelling film:

1. The movie is an adaptation of Jane Austen's timeless novel, which explores themes of love, class, and societal expectations in 19th-century England. The story's enduring appeal lies in its relatable characters and their struggles, making it relevant even today.

2. Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen deliver exceptional performances as Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, respectively. Their chemistry and nuanced portrayals breathe life into these iconic characters.

3. Director Joe Wright's visually stunning portrayal of the English countryside and Regency-era settings adds to the film's charm. The cinematography transports viewers to the story's world, enhancing the overall experience.

4. The film retains Austen's sharp and witty dialogue, filled with clever exchanges and banter among the characters. This engaging dialogue not only amuses but also provides insight into the characters' personalities.

5. "Pride and Prejudice" explores the societal norms of its time, shedding light on issues related to class, reputation, and the limited roles available to women in the 19th century. It offers thought-provoking commentary on these themes.

6. At its core, the film is a story of personal growth and self-discovery. Characters like Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy undergo significant transformations as they confront their own biases and preconceptions.

Now, let's discuss the differences between the main text (Jane Austen's novel) and the movie adaptation:

1.The movie is an adaptation of the novel, which means that it condenses and streamlines the original story to fit within a typical film runtime. This results in some scenes and characters from the book being omitted or simplified.

2. The film offers a visual interpretation of the story, allowing viewers to see the characters, settings, and costumes. While readers of the novel create their mental images, the movie presents a specific visual style and aesthetic.

3.While the film captures the essence of the characters, interpretations may vary slightly from how readers imagine them. The actors' portrayals bring their own nuances to the roles.

4. Due to time constraints, the movie may not delve as deeply into character backgrounds or provide as much internal monologue as the novel. Some subtleties of the characters' thoughts and feelings are conveyed differently on screen.

5.To make the story more accessible for a wide audience, the film may omit or simplify certain subplots, secondary characters, or intricate details present in the book.

6.The film adds a visual and musical dimension that is absent in the written text. Cinematography, music, and costumes play a significant role in shaping the film's atmosphere and emotional impact.

In conclusion, while "Pride and Prejudice" (2005) captures the essence of Jane Austen's novel and offers a compelling cinematic experience, there are inherent differences between the two mediums. The film streamlines the story, provides a visual interpretation, and relies on the talents of its actors to bring the characters to life. Both the book and the movie have their own unique merits, and fans of the story often appreciate both for different reasons.

Movie review of  the movie "Frankenstein"(1994):-

"Mary Shelley's Frankenstein," released in 1994, is a film adaptation of the classic novel "Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus" written by Mary Shelley. Directed by Kenneth Branagh, who also stars as Victor Frankenstein, this cinematic interpretation brings a faithful and visually stunning rendition of the timeless tale of science, ambition, and the consequences of playing god.

The film stays relatively true to the source material, exploring the themes of creation, responsibility, and the isolation of the creature. Branagh's portrayal of Victor Frankenstein is filled with passion and obsession, capturing the character's descent into madness as he becomes consumed by his experiment to create life. The film delves deep into the moral and ethical dilemmas surrounding scientific experimentation and the power it bestows upon individuals.

Robert De Niro's portrayal of the Creature is a standout performance, as he brings both sympathy and terror to the role. His journey from a misunderstood creation to a vengeful being is both tragic and compelling. De Niro's makeup and prosthetics are particularly well-done, creating a believable and grotesque appearance for the Creature.

The film's production design and cinematography are exceptional, with lavish period sets and a dark, Gothic atmosphere that captures the essence of Shelley's original work. The use of practical effects and detailed sets adds to the authenticity and immersion of the story.

One notable departure from the novel is the inclusion of a romantic subplot involving Victor Frankenstein and Elizabeth, played by Helena Bonham Carter. While this element adds emotional depth to the characters, it may feel somewhat forced and distracting to those who are familiar with the source material.

"Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" is a visually striking and emotionally charged adaptation that remains faithful to the novel's themes and spirit. While it may not have reached the same iconic status as some other Frankenstein adaptations, it offers a compelling and thought-provoking exploration of the consequences of human ambition and scientific experimentation. If you appreciate faithful adaptations of classic literature and enjoy dark, atmospheric period dramas, this film is worth a watch.
